Ileen Hilda Christensen was born November 16, 1925, at Nassau, Minnesota; the daughter of Charles and Hilda (Lau) Wirkus. She attended grammar school in Nassau and graduated from Marietta, MN High School in 1943. She attended Madison, MN Normal Teacher's Training, followed by two years at Wortburgh College in Waverly, Iowa. She also attended Moorhead State College, Moorhead, MN. Ileen was united in marriage on June 19, 1955, at Nassau, MN with Clifford Christensen.
Following their marriage, the couple lived on the family farm south of Big Stone City, SD and later moved into Big Stone City. Ileen was a school teacher for 39 years, teaching in the school systems of Boyd, MN, Revillo, SD, Milbank, SD, Big Stone City, SD and in the rural schools in Lac Qui Parle County, MN. She retired from teaching in 1990.
Ileen was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank and a devoted singer with the Big Stone Area Community Chorus. She enjoyed being a long-time member of the homemakers club, and the Chat and Do Club. The 4-H program was also a very important part of her and her children's life. She assisted many area youth with a variety of 4-H activities and was recognized, along with Clifford, as one of Grant County's Friends of 4-H.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Clifford; one son, Roger (Sandy) Christensen; two daughters, Linda (Troy) Asher, and Janel (Paul) Andrews; 8 grandchildren; and one brother, Merlin Wirkus. She was preceded in death by her parents.
