Irene Klepel, age 89, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the Canton Good Samaritan Society. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2010 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church, with burial at Canton Lutheran Cemetery.
Iva Irene Klepel was born August 29, 1920 at Wallace, SD, to Lucius and Achsah (Minor) Heemstock. She attended school in Wallace and Big Stone City, SD.
Irene married Emil Klepel February 27, 1937 in Milbank, SD.
The couple lived in Odessa, MN until 1940 when they moved to Canton. Irene worked at Otis Radio for 15 years and Canton Good Samaritan Center as a dietary aide for 17 years, retiring in 1995. Her husband died May 16, 1978.
She was a member of Canton Lutheran Church and WELCA. She enjoyed reading, the Minnesota Twins, and making crafts, including dolls and centerpieces for the Good Sam dining hall.
Grateful for having shared her life are: 3 daughters- Bonnie (LeRoy) Hemmer, Madison, SD, Erma Jean Thompson, Canton, SD and Charlotte (Louis) O'Brien, Sioux Falls, SD; a son, Emil Klepel, Jr., Canton, SD; 15 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Opal Pederson of Sioux Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Emil, daughter, Karen Farnsworth, 3 brothers- Harold, Ernest, and Merle, and 3 sisters- Avis, Edna, and Mildred.
