Bernice was born on a farm near Lane, Jerauld County, SD, to Anton and Bertha (Nesje) Lillehaug. She was confirmed in 1941 at Solberg Lutheran Church near Lane.
Bernice graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1946. She went on to receive the first grade certificate course from Wessington Springs College in 1947 and earned an Associate in Education degree in 1959. In 1973 she earned a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education degree from Huron College. She taught in various schools in Jerauld County, including serving as the first grade teacher in Faulkton, SD, 1959-1979. Bernice retired from teaching in 1979. She was awarded the South Dakota Award of Excellent Rural Schoolteacher Award in 1986 in appreciation of outstanding service to students and the state of South Dakota as a teacher in a one-teacher rural school.
Bernice found time during summer vacations to take trips to the West Coast and one to the East Coast. A highlight of her retirement was traveling with her brother, Kenneth, for two weeks in Norway in 1993.
Survivors include cousins Leland (Ardis) Lillehaug of Edina, Minn., Verda Stroh of Bremerton, Wash., Judy (Bill) Koens of Buckley, Wash., Andrea (Mac) Macmillan of Long Beach, Calif., and Bette Ann (Larry) Burkhart of Gig Harbor, Wash.
Preceded in death were brothers Arthur and Kenneth.
Inurnment will be Saturday, Oct. 4, in Solberg Cemetery in rural Lane at 10 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs. Memorials may be sent to Weskota Manor or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
