Son of William and Rebecca Adams Hawley. He was a carpenter by trade.
On Sep. 18, 1861 he married Julia Jackson Warren in Meigs Co., OH. They had 11 children: John Rosecrans, Ellis Sherman "Ellie", Laura, Alice, Samantha Rebecca "Mattie", Bertha A., Bertram, George Wyatt, Lizzie Ann, Marsellis Edwin, & Edith Achsah.
John Hawley was in the Civil War, Vol. Inf. 18th Reg. OH. He was a member of the Pioneer Brigade, an engineering unit analogous to today's Army Corps of Engineers. The description at his enlistment was height 5' 7 3/8", fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes.
His wife Julia died May 4, 1908. On June 3, 1909 John married Mrs. Mary E. Fairleigh, 28 years his junior. (Her maiden name may have been Wilson.)
