      Son of Paul G Gartman (1795-1847) and Catherine Hamilton Byrd (1797-1850). He married Emily Ann Miller (1830-1875) on December 20 1847. There were nine children from that marriage. Emily died in 1875 and he married Susannah Howard and they had two more children. George died in 1896.
      There is some discrepancy as to whether his middle initial W stood for Washington or William.
