MOLDREM, Karl A., age 84, died Thurs. in Palm Springs where he lived for 31 yrs. He was the creator of the World's First Baby Orchestra in Hollywood & New York (Children 2-6 playing the violin). His method of teaching was the forerunner to the Suzuki method. He was raised in Bellingham & studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston & with Madam Davenport Engberg & Francis J. Armstrong in Seattle. He originated and founded the Grays Harbor Symphony Orchestra. His Hollywood Baby Orchestra was in many movies including "Babes in Arms" with Rooney & Garland. One of his pupils, Lorin Maazel is conductor of the Cleveland Symphony. Billy Barty, the New York entertainer was his child conductor. He is survived by his wife, Edna & 3 children: Stuart Moldrem of Seattle, Kern Moldrem of Riverside, Ca. & Maxine (Mrs. Ned Hall) of Vancouver, WA.
