RITES HELD TUESDAY FOR TORGER SOMA, KILLED IN PLANE CRASH SATURDAY
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Trinity Lutheran Church for Torger G. Soma, 49, who was killed Saturday morning when his plane crashed six miles south and a mile west of Cooperstown. He was well known as a large-scale farmer and road construction contractor.
Mr. Soma, who owned several sections of land frequently used the airplane for visit land holdings and to check on construction crews, had been spraying fields Saturday morning.
After finishing, he flew to a nearby road, where his construction crew was working. Witnesses said he apparently tried to turn at a low altitude and the plane stalled and crashed as it started into a spin.
Soma was killed instantly and the plane was demolished. The crash occurred about a mile and a half from the farm where he was born.
A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Soma was born February 8, 1906, and attended local schools and NDAC.
He married Inga Njaa June 17, 1930, at Moorhead, Minnesota. They farmed south of Cooperstown until two years ago, when they moved into town. He was president of the Farmers Oil Company of Cooperstown at the time of his death, and had served on the district school board and the town board.
He leaves Mrs. Soma; his mother, Mrs. Gina Soma, Cooperstown; two sons, Jergen, on the home farm and David at home; four daughters, Mrs. Earl (Georgine) Lynnes, Walcott, ND, and Margaret, Karen and Carla at home; four brothers, Ingvald, Jonas and Omund of Cooperstown and Oscar of Finley; and five sisters, Mrs.Nettie Pickett, Burbank, CA, Mrs. Carl O. Johnson, Cooperstown, Mrs. Carl Jordahl, Lidgerwood, ND, Mrs. Ray Campbell in Oregon and Mrs. E. H. Vermiluyea, Cottonwood, MN.
