Johnnie W. Sabrsula was born on the family farm in Wallis,Texas on December 7, 1922 to John J. and Emily Petrusek Sabrsula. He passed from this life to the next on April 15, 2013 at the age of 90 years.
While in high school, he played football and ran track at the state meet in Austin. He graduated from Wallis High School in 1940.
In 1942 he joined the Navy with his cousin "Dutch" Petrusek and best friend John Reuther. He flew 20 combat missions over the Southwest Pacific during World War II with squadron VPB 137 and was the turret gunner on PV-1 Venturas. He received 2 Purple Hearts, 4 Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in September of 1945. He was a member of the American Legion Post 200 in Wallis and the Purple Heart Society. Upon his return home from the service he met the love of his life, Lou Alma Kurtz, and they were married on December 31, 1945 in Sealy, Texas. They loved to travel, go camping, play 42 and visit friends. They were married almost 60 years before she passed away in November, 2005.
Johnnie worked for Tennessee Gas and retired from Florida Gas in 1984.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, wife, daughter, Brenda Hinson and great-granddaughter, Mallory King.
Survivors include two brothers, Herman and wife Betty and Ruben and wife Madeline; daughter, Lynell Dworsky and husband Al; son-in-law, Bill Hinson; grandchildren, Allen Dworsky and wife Kristin, Beverly Jund and husband John, and Cindy King and husband Craig; three great-grandchildren, Alex Yamato, Bailey Dworsky and Ryan Dworsky.
Pallbearers will be Allen Dworsky, Craig King, Scott Sabrsula, Al Jan, David Dworsky and David Sabrsula. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 17th from 6 to 8PM at Knesek Funeral Home in Wallis, Texas. Services will be Thursday, April 18th at 10:30 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wallis.
