Funeral services for Alvin Jan, Sr., 91, of Pleak, are 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church in Rosenberg, with the Rev. Charles Teykl officiating. Interment follows in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Visitation is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg.
Alvin was born Sept. 13, 1917 in Sealy to Leopold and Anna Jan. He was a veteran of World War II, having proudly served his country in Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland. He was a member of the American Legion for 46 years during which he served as Commander, Finance Officer, Executive Committee Member, and Membership Recruiter.
After the service, he opened a garage in Needville and eventually opened Jan’s Texaco Station in Pleak, later relocating to Rosenberg and adding Al’s Small Engine Repair. In 1976, he moved Al’s Small Engine Repair to Pleak near his residence, retiring in 1985. Alvin was a member of the Needville Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed camping, gardening, fishing, playing dominoes, and, most of all, spending time with his family. He passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Richmond.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Leopold and Anna Jan; sisters, Rosie Kalina, Emily Teykl, and Marcie Sabrsula; brothers, Lumir Jan, Emil Jan, and Orville Jan; and granddaughter, Tami Jene Jan.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Etheleen Ressler Jan of Pleak; children, Alvin Jan Jr. of St. Croix, Art Jan and wife, Linda, of Needville, and Faye Jan of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Tami Lynn Jan and husband, Ward Galbreath, Dusty Jan, Lee Jan and wife, Patti, Shelley Wendt and husband, Wade, Nathan Jan and wife, Marissa, Collin, Cuyler, Cameron, and Cori Pawlak; great-grandchildren, Kaiya and Quinn Galbreath, Meghan, Madelynne, and Newt Jan, Kirby, Coleman, and Madison Jan, Mitchell and Nolan Wendt, and Alexis Fluitt; sister, Adelle Marek; and other relatives and many friends.
Pallbearers include Lee Jan, Nathan Jan, Dusty Jan, Collin Pawlak, Cuyler Pawlak, and Cameron Pawlak. Honorary pallbearers include Newt Jan, Coleman Jan, Quinn Galbreath, Mitchell Wendt, Nolan Wendt, Ward Galbreath, and Wade Wendt.
