Barker was the youngest child of Thomas Barker and Katie Mae Fisher. His sisters were Alarah, Villa Mae, and his brother was Jack. His parents divorced when he was a teenager. He graduated from Anahuac High School when he was 16, lied about his age (with his mother's permission) so that he could join the Army Air Corps. He learned to fly, and was a cargo pilot during World War 2. He was mostly over in New Guinea. He sent money home to support his mother and his sisters. (His brother joined the Marines and was at Iwo Jima). After the war, he was asked to fly for Pennsylvania Central Airlines, which merged with Capital Airlines. He met his wife, Marty Townsend, who was a stewardess. They married and had 3 children. Capital merged with United Airlines in 1961. Barker retired in 1984, #1 in seniority on United. His oldest son James, retired from United Airlines. His youngest child, Glen, retired from Shell Oil. His daughter, JoAnne, married and moved to Pennsylvania, and has since divorced and moved to Florida. Barker's life was basically one of "rags to riches", but he never became arrogant, and never forgot his humble beginnings and was kind to everyone. He died of lung cancer in 1997. His wife, Marty, died in 2009 of vascular dementia.
