Mamie Elizabeth Gartman (Pierce) was born in Citronelle, AL near the Washington County line on April 21, 1911 to Miles "Tunney" Gartman and Viola Boothe Gartman.
Mamie had eight siblings:
Charlie,
Ruby
Garner,
Joe,
Paul,
Eli,
Hester "Bootsie"
and an infant brother who died at birth.
She married Jerry Pierce, Jr on March 6, 1930 in Leakesville, MS.
They had seven children:
Jerry Miles Pierce (1932-2007)
Joyce Estelle (Riordan)(1934-1971)
Jeraline Jeannette (Martin)(1938-)
Bobby Jean Pierce (1941-)
Betty Jo (Shadrach)(1941-2014)
Carolyn Viola (Walker)(1944-)
Katie Marie (Grantham)(1947-1971)
They also raised their grand daughter Donna Kaye Grantham (1968-) when her mother Katie was killed in a car accident in 1971.
At the time of her death, Mamie's survivors included five of her children:Miles, Jeraline, Bobby, Betty & Carolyn and Donna the grand-daughter she raised, as well as 15 other grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren & 5 great-great grandchildren.
Mamie was a devout Christian and attended the Citronelle Church of God regularly. A quote from one of her favorite songs goes like this, "the sun's coming up in the morning, every tear will gone from my eyes, this old clay's gonna give way to Glory, and like an eagle I'll take to the skies"
She died peacefully in her sleep on Sept 20, 1996 at her home in Citronelle. She was a very active woman and had been shopping with her daughter the day before.
She was my biologically my grandmother but since the age of three and half years old, she had been the only mother I had ever known and I still miss her dearly.
A very special THANKS to SSBJ for sponsoring my Grandma's memorial and for the beautiful pictures she added.
