Rickey Allen Olson was born February 6, 1947, at Minot, N.D., a son of Carl Walfred and Donna A. (Davick) Olson. He graduated from Kenmare, North Dakota High School in 1965 and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Rickey was awarded the Purple Heart in 1967 for wounds suffered in the Republic of Vietnam. He married Jean M. (Veenendaal) McMillan in Sacramento on May 8, 1971. They later divorced. He married Billie Hudspeth June 30, 1989. They lived in South Dakota before moving to Council Bluffs 15 years ago. Rickey was a cutter at American Games for 9 years until health problems led to his retirement in August of 2003. He was a member of the Lutheran faith; life member of the D.A.V., Donald Macrae Post #5; American Legion Post #729 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Rickey died at the age of 61years on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at his residence in Council Bluffs, Iowa from complications of emphysema.
Rickey was preceded in death by his parents, Carl W. and Donna M. Olson.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Billie Olson; stepdaughter, Karre O'Dell and Brian Conner all of Council Bluffs; stepsons, Patrick O'Connor of Lincoln, Neb., Robert O'Connor of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Michael O'Connor of Council Bluffs; grandchildren, Anthony O'Dell, Jacob Conner, Beonica Morrison; sister, Paula Knutson and husband Pete of Ethelbert, Manitoba, Canada; brothers, Donn Olson and wife Deanna of Mishawaka, Ind., Lee Olson and wife Konnie of Arvada, Colo.; nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the Family, Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral service, Thursday, September 11, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary. Officiating for the service will be Rev. Dick Sladky. Recorded music for the funeral will be "Go Rest High on the Mountain" and "When I Get Where I'm Going". Active Casketbearers will be Pat and Mike O'Connor, Brian Conner, Lee and Donn Olson, Pete Knutson. Burial will be at Lewis Township Cemetery, rural Council Bluffs. Military honors will be tendered by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Memorials may be directed to the family.
