- William A. Baxter, son of \William P. Baxter and Esther Wightman Yeamans was born October 25, I 835. in Matagorda County, and died August 20, 1889. he married October 25. 186 I . to Josephine Bruce, daughter of David t. Bruce and Elizabeth [Smalley) Burnett Bruce. She died of yellow fever at the age of twenty two, September 25. I 862, and was buried at Matagorda. This couple did not have any children. His second marriage was to Ann E. Williams, March 16, 1868 He, like his father, was a rancher. During the Civil \WAR, he was in Company D, 6th Texas .infantry, C.S.A. He was justice of the peace in Matagorda from June to December of 1869,filling in when W.H. Burkhart died. In the probate minutes, William A. Baxter was made administrator of his wife's estate, which consisted of one hundred acres of land on the Peninsula and the following children were named;
