Loren Bjornson Obituary
Lieutenant Colonel Loren F. Bjornson, born June 26, 1934 in Bismark, North Dakota, to Fred and Evelyn Bjornson, passed away on August 6, 2016. He graduated from Minot High School and obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree from North Dakota State University. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant through the AFROTC program in 1956 and entered active duty status in 1957 where he was assigned to the 3700th Pre Flight Training Group at Lackland. He received his wings while serving with the 3607th Training Squadron in 1958. Lieutenant Colonel Loren F. Bjornson had an illustrious career serving as a flight instructor, flight commander, standardized/evaluations flight examiner, air operations officer, Executive officer and Wing Commander and Air Operations Officer. In 1973 Lieutenant Colonel Bjornson served as Base Commander at Fuchu Air Station, Japan. In 1974 he was assigned to the 475th Air Base Wing as Chief of social actions in 1975 and again selected as Base Commander later that year.
In 1977 Lieutenant Colonel Bjornson returned to the United States and served as Vice Chief of Staff at the Armament Development and Test Center. He was a Master Navigator with over 7100 flying hours, nearly all of it in C-130 aircraft. He has flown 343 combat sorties and has logged 1192 combat hours. His military decorations and awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC); the Air Medial with eight OLC; Air Force Commendation medal with one OLC; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Combat V Device and six OLC; Combat Readiness Medal with three OLC; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with four service stars; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with eleven Service Stars; Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm; and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was preceded in death by his late wife, Eloise Bjornson and a son David Fred Bjornson. Left to cherish the wonderful memories that he leaves behind will be his beloved wife, Sharon K. Bjornson; one daughter, Laura Ann Bjornson; six step-children: Morris-Skip Blumenthal, Christopher Blumenthal, Kathryne Stalker, Clyde Biggerstaff, Bryan Biggerstaff and Tracey Pavesick, one granddaughter, Kira Chastine; along with many extended family members and numerous wonderful friends.
Lieutenant Colonel Bjornsen always supported Boys Town and the Elks Lodge 1795 in Fort Walton.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 21, 2016 at 3pm at the Elks Lodge #1795. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in honor of Lieutenant Bjornson to the Elks Lodge #1795, 1335 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548. (850-244-5381)
