      James Mitzel, Sr., age 78, of Milbank died December 10th at the Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

      A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 13th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.

      Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

      Visitation will be Friday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the Mass.

      Music will be provided by Sandy Tucholke, organist; the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir and Della Doran, vocalist. Honorary bearers will be his children and grandchildren. Casket bearers will be: Bob Rethke, Wyatt Davis, Marvin Powell, Kerwin Schultz, Glen Weeden, and Leo Folk.

      Military honors will be presented the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9 and the VFW, Grant County Post #3486.

      James William Mitzel was born September 20, 1930, in Milbank, SD. He was the son of Frank and Marcelline (Fritz) Mitzel. He graduated from Milbank High School on June 8, 1946. He served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska as a teletype operator for four years. He was united in marriage with Vivian Darlene Jacobson on January 17, 1959, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1959. He returned to Milbank and began his career as a bridge foreman for the Grant County Highway Department. He worked there for 38 years.

      Jim was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, a member of the V.F.W.Grant County Post #9, and the American Legion, Birch- Miller Post #3486.

      James Mitzel is survived by his wife, Vivian of Milbank; six children: Cheryl and husband Gary Cannedy; James Mitzel, Jr. and special friend Pam Smith; Mike and wife Nichole Mitzel; Mary and husband Arlin Munson; David Mitzel all of Milbank;Teresa Folk and special friend Pat Byle of Colgate, WI and four grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Marcelline; one brother, Francis Mitzel; one sister, Selma Smith; one grand son, Connor Munson and several aunts, uncles, and nieces.
